Their priority is often obtaining or using more of their substance of choice, making it difficult for them to focus on other important tasks, jobs, and people in their lives. In a short period of time, this can lead to job loss, expulsion from school, a romantic breakup or divorce, the loss of child custody, and so on. These devastating losses can cause more of a mental breakdown and exacerbate the addiction and related behaviors.

You don’t have to work out for an hour at a time to reap the benefits, though you certainly can if you want to! Just going for a 10-minute walk two or three times per day can help you gain mental clarity and ease your stress levels.
Remember those 35,000 decisions that you make each day? You can cut a lot of them out by making a list of things you need to do. Sit down and decide what you want to accomplish each day, as well as when you can fit them in. Voila, you no longer have to make those decisions for the day! The nice thing about making lists is that you can see what your patterns are and then simply add them to each day’s list. - Specific: Define exactly what you want to accomplish. For example, instead of saying, “I want to improve my life, start with, “I want to earn a one-year sober pin.”
- Meaningful: Choose something that is personally meaningful. In our example, the pin is a tangible and meaningful way for you to remember your year of sobriety.
- Achievable: Make sure that your goal is reasonable and something you can achieve. If you are newly on your recovery journey, a one-year pin might not be reasonable yet. Start with the 30-day pin.
- Relevant: Your goal or mini-goal will need to be related to your overall life plan. In our example, your plan is to have a more successful life, and overcoming your addiction is part of that.
- Time-Sensitive: Don’t leave your goal without a defined end. Whether you choose a day, a week, a month, or a year, mark the date on the calendar when you’d like to achieve your goal.
Using some of these strategies can boost the odds in your favor when it comes to improving your mental clarity. In turn, your enhanced mental awareness will help you enjoy your life as well as take control of your addiction. You might have relapses and setbacks, but your trending pattern will be toward success, and it will all help you improve your mind and overall health.
