ONGOING SUPPORT FOR SUSTAINABLE CHANGE
Outpatient
Program (OP)
Who is Outpatient Right For?
The Outpatient Program (OP) is designed for adults who want consistent clinical support while maintaining full independence in daily life. OP is a strong fit for clients who are stable in recovery and mental health functioning, but benefit from ongoing therapy, accountability, and structured check-ins.
Outpatient care is often an effective step-down after PHP or IOP, or a starting point for individuals with mild-to-moderate symptoms who do not need multiple sessions per week. The areas highlighted below reflect the range of concerns we treat and how OP supports long-term stability across substance use recovery and mental health care.
What Is the Outpatient Program (OP)?
The Outpatient Program (OP) at The Heights Treatment Center provides ongoing clinical support for individuals continuing recovery from substance use, mental health conditions, or co-occurring diagnoses. OP offers a flexible structure with scheduled sessions that help clients stay connected to care while fully participating in work, school, family life, and community responsibilities.
Outpatient may include individual therapy, group therapy, family involvement when appropriate, and coordination with psychiatric services when clinically indicated. The emphasis is on maintaining progress, strengthening relapse prevention skills, and supporting long-term emotional stability.
-
How (and Why) Outpatient Works
Outpatient care supports long-term change by keeping clients connected to therapy and accountability while they practice recovery skills in real-world settings. With regular touchpoints, clients can address triggers early, process life stressors, and continue strengthening coping strategies as routines, relationships, and responsibilities evolve.
Many clients transition into Outpatient after completing IOP or PHP. Others begin with Outpatient after an assessment indicates a lower level of weekly structure is clinically appropriate.
-
How is Outpatient Structured for Personalized Care?
Outpatient programming is tailored to the client’s clinical needs, goals, and stage of recovery. Schedules vary, but may include:
- Individual therapy sessions
- Group therapy and skills-based support, when clinically indicated
- Relapse prevention planning and recovery coaching alignment
- Trauma-informed modalities when appropriate
- Psychiatric coordination and medication management, when needed
Frequency and services adjust over time based on progress, stability, and clinical recommendations.

A Typical Outpatient Schedule
Flexible Appointments | Customized Frequency
Outpatient is tailored to the client’s needs and may include:
- 1–2 sessions per week: Common for stable clients who want consistent support and accountability.
- Individual therapy: Focused on relapse prevention, mental health stabilization, and life skills.
- Group therapy (when indicated): Skills, process support, and community connection.
- Psychiatric support (as needed): Medication evaluation and ongoing coordination.
- Family involvement (when appropriate): Strengthening communication, boundaries, and recovery support.
Exact days and times vary based on clinical placement and individualized treatment planning.
Efficacy of Outpatient Programs
Outpatient care is an effective level of support for maintaining recovery and improving mental health functioning over time. With consistent clinical touchpoints, clients can reinforce coping skills, reduce relapse risk, and address challenges early—without stepping away from work, school, or family responsibilities.
At The Heights Treatment Center, Outpatient integrates evidence-based therapies such as Cognitive Behavioral Therapy (CBT) and Dialectical Behavior Therapy (DBT), with trauma-informed care and psychiatric coordination when clinically appropriate.

ASAM Assessment and the Continuum of Care
The ASAM Criteria is the most widely used and comprehensive set of guidelines for placement, continued stay, transfer, or discharge of patients with addiction and co-occurring conditions.
Using the ASAM Criteria in conjunction with The Heights Treatment clinical staff’s professional judgment enables us to provide outcome-oriented, results-based care in our addiction and mental health treatment.
ASAM outlines levels of care based on the outcome of the 6 ASAM dimensions assessment. These levels of care range from early intervention (0.5) through more intensive services.
At The Heights Treatment, when the client has stabilized and no longer requires PHP or IOP intensity, they may transition into Outpatient Program (Level 1) for ongoing support, maintenance, and accountability.
-
Continuum of Care
At The Heights Treatment, we strongly believe that there is no “one-size-fits-all” approach to treatment for mental health issues, substance use disorders, or co-occurring diagnoses.
Every client begins with a pre-assessment. Based on clinical presentation, goals, and risk factors, the Clinical Director and Treatment Team determine the appropriate level of care.
Once the level of care is determined, treatment is individualized based on:
- The client’s multidimensional biopsychosocial assessment guided by ASAM Criteria
- The client’s perceived needs and preferences
- The determination of the multidisciplinary treatment team
As clients stabilize, they transition to less intensive services. Outpatient is often a long-term support layer that helps clients maintain progress and address challenges as life continues to unfold.
-

Frequently Asked Questions About Outpatient in Houston
Common questions about eligibility, scheduling, and what to expect in our Houston Outpatient Program.
How often do clients attend Outpatient (OP)?
Outpatient frequency varies by clinical need. Many clients attend weekly individual therapy, while others attend multiple sessions per week or include group therapy for additional support. Your schedule is determined through clinical assessment and can change as you progress.
Is Outpatient a step-down from IOP/PHP, or can someone start in OP?
Both. Many clients transition into Outpatient after completing IOP or PHP to maintain momentum and stay connected to care. Others begin in Outpatient after an assessment indicates they do not require a higher level of weekly structure but still benefit from consistent clinical support and accountability.
What does Outpatient include at The Heights Treatment Center?
Outpatient may include individual therapy, group therapy when indicated, relapse prevention work, and ongoing treatment planning. Clients can also receive psychiatric coordination and medication management if appropriate, as well as family involvement when clinically indicated. The focus is on long-term stability, skill-building, and continued growth while living independently.
